May 05, 1979 - THE POPE'S PILGRIMAGE TO MONTE CASSINO. 35 years since the battle and the fall of Monte Cassino, in which countless thousands of British, German and Polish soldiers died, pope John Paul II flew over the historic site in his helicopter, to pay tribute to his Polish country who perished there. He visited the abbey, and then held marsamid the gaves of 1, 000 polish soldiers who fell in the seven-day battle.
