Aug. 08, 1967 - A Portrait Of Sir Winston In Glass - And The Sculptor Has A Smashing Time Creating It: Sculptor Bainbridge Copnall, 63, has to destroy before he can create his works of art. He is halfway through making a huge glass memorial screen of Sir Winston Churchill for Dudley Borough Council. He imports slabs of coloured glass and smashes them with a hammer before sticking them with resin, three of four inches deep on to an armoured-glass base. The centre piece of the 17 panels, which will stand between two office blocks in the town centre, is a large portrait of Sir Winston. The screen will take 18 months to complete, and the design includes the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral on fire during the Blitz, some of Sir Winston's orders and decorations, and the armed services.
