1969 - Mayor hid for 32 years. Senor Manuel Cortes Quero, 64, who became mayor of the village of Mijas, Malaga (pain) for the Republican era (1933 - 1936), has come out of hiding after 32 years spent in the attic of his house, where he hid when General Franco's Nationalist troops marched in on February 2, 1937. His wife took him his meals, but visitors to the house never suspected he was there. He came out of hiding when he learnt that the Government had recently declared an amnesty, pardoning all General Franco's civil war opponents.
