Post Office - Postal Service

Sep. 09, 1954 - The post office engineering research station at Dollis Hill.: The Post Office Research station at Dollis Hill, London, N.W.2. houses both the Research Branch and mest of the Radio Experimental Branch, with a combines staff of nearly 1, 000. The main purpose of the work at Dollis Hill is to maintain and improve the efficiency of the telecommunication services provided by the Past Office by studies of new phenomena, techniques and materials and the development of new experimental systems and apparatus. The Station is consulted by other Government Departments at and Laboratories and work is done for them. Photo shows a novel type of saw for the economical cutting of quartz crystals or other Materials - Sawing the slices of an expensive raw material, such as the quartz used for controlling radio transmitters, is a wasteful process because much of the material becomes useless sawdust. This wasteful process because much of the material becomes useless sawdust. This wastage can be reduced by making the sawblade very thin, but in conventional quartz-cutting saws this results in loss of rigidity. The new saw combines thinness with rigidity nu keeping the blade in tension. The sawcuts made by it are less than half the width of those made formerly
