Jul. 07, 1967 - Postmaster general opens postal Fortnight, 1967. Following the success of the Postal week held in a 1963, a postal fortnight on similar lines, was opened today by the Postmaster General, the Rt. Hon. Edward Short, at a Press Conference at Norwich, where there is a prototype fully-mechanised letter sorting office. The train on which members of the Press travelled to Norqich with thw PMG included a Travelling Post Officeach so that the press party were able to see sorting being carried out on the move. Photo shows Mr. Edward Short, the PMG, chats to Mr. G. Reeve, sen at work on one of the new coding desks. Letters are presented to the view of operators seated at keyboards. They copy the code on the keyboard. and the code is translated into a pattern of faint, phosphorescent dots printed on the envelope. From then on the letter can be sorted complete;y automatically anywhere in the country by machines which can be read the dot pattern. If the code is not written on the letter the operator extracts a code from the town name, in accordance with a predeterminate set of rules (e.g. Norch fr Norwich and the correct dot pattern for that town (but not for the street) is printed
