Praca Tiradentes, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The Praca Tiradentes with the statute of Tiradentes and the city hall of Ouro Preto in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Every year on April 21 the holiday of Tiradentes is held, and the population of Ouro Preto celebrate this big hero, who became a martyr-patriot for the whole of Brazil. He was the leader of the abortive attempt to throw off Portuguese rule in 1789 and establish a democratic republic. He was born in 1748 in Sao Joao del Rei and his real name was Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier. Called upon to perform what passed for dentistry in those days, he acquired the nickname Tiradentes - tooth puller. He was executed on April 21 in 1792 in Ouro Preto and his head was stuck on a pole in the same square where his monument now stands
