Nov. 11, 1969 - Prayer For Freedom of Tibet And World Peace. About 500 Buddhists, many of them Tibetan refugees, marched in a procession through the streets of Calcutta last week-end, praying for world peace, freedom of Tibet from Chinese rule and safety of the Panchen Lama who, they believe, has fled from the Chinese Labour camp and is on his way to India. Among the processionists, were a large number of Tibetan women traditional Tibetan dress. Many of them were holding burning incense sticks while all carried on their backs Buddhist scriptures bound in wooden frames. The procession was led by a group of Tibetan monks in their traditional dress. Some of them were blowing the long bugles or beating the drums while others chanted Buddhist prayers. An image of Buddha was also in the procession. The procession, taken out on the occasion of the Return of the Buddha ceremony, started from the Tibetan temple in South Calcutta and after marching about ten miles, altogether returned to the temple marking the end of the ceremony.
