Jan. 16, 1966 - Abuja, Nigeria - Nigeria, West Africa's biggest State was popised on the brink of civil war last night as Army leaders loyal to the Federal Government sought to quell an attempted coup d'etat by dissadent military elements. The prime minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is said to have been kidnapped and reliable sources also say that Chief Akintola, Western Region Premier and Sir Ahmadu Bello were among the pro-Government supporters killed by the insurgents.
