1962 - President Frondizi Refuses To Resign. Arrested And Taken To Prison Island In The River Plate: President Frondizi of Argentina refused to agree to the armed force ultimatum that he should resign and he was then arrested and taken to the prison island in the River Plate. He is succeeded by Dr. Jose Guido - who is his friend - and who is said to have agreed to a set of the military demands - including the outlawing of followers of the ex-dictator Peron - Castroites and Communists. The armed forces coup was designed to prevent Peronists gaining power after their election victories 12 days ago.
