He takes an active part in politics as an elected member of the Legislative Council, and is also a member of the Executive Council. In the last quarter of 19th century the Bechuana (main subdivisions: Bmangwato, the Bangwaketsi and the Bakwena) appealed to Britain for protection against Boer invaders. In 1885 the whole territory more than three times the size of Britain was proclaimed to be under the protection of the Queen. Today the territory is administered by Her Majesty's Commissioner for Bachuananland, who is directly responsible to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, although the High Commissioner for Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland retains the power to intervene in matters affecting the administration of the territory (Since the advent of the South African Republic in May, 1961 the High Commissioner has also held the office of Her Majesty's Ambassador to South Africa).
