Prisons

Jun. 06, 1967 - First Prison-Dog Patrols Ready For Duty. The first seven dogs trained for prison service will be introduced to London prisons this month. Brixton, Wormwood Scrubs and Wandsworth will get tow each, and the seventh will be used as a relief. The seven have spent seven weeks at the Metropolitan Police dig training school at Keston, Kent, where in 18 months a total of 200 dogs will be prepared for prison service. Three warders have been trained to handle each of the first seven dogs. Brig. Mark Maunsell. Inspector General of the prison service, went to Keston to present the 21 warders with certificates. Police have been undertaking dog patrols at prisons since October. Eventually warders will take over from them. The task of the patrols is to prevent escapes, detect and detain intruders, help in searching prisons for missing prisoners, and sometimes help in escort duties. Patrols will not normally work outside the walls.
