Prisons
1970 - Israel maintains Prison conditions are proper: In a report released by Amnesty international of London, Israel was accused of mistreating Arab prisoners by way of beatings, electric shocks and cigarette burns, and they quoted case histories of certain persons. The Israel Foreign Ministry emphatically denied all these charges, and furnished Amnestry with detailed results of an investigation on the one section which contained names of complainants, which prove them to be totally unfounded. Last week Defence Minister Moshe Dayan stated in the Knesset (Israel Parliament) that there are 226 people imprisoned without trial, by an administrative order from the Chief of Staff or the Defense Minister on suspicion of terrorist activities. There are altogether 3100 imprisoned for various kinds of terrorist actions. This figure includes those without trial, as well as those already sentenced or awaiting trial.
