Jul. 07, 1971 - Prisoners Build Midlands Prison Which Was Formally Opened Today. Mr. Mark Carlisle, M.P. Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Home Office, today formally opened Ranby Prison, near East Ratford, Nottinghamshire, which will eventually accomodate 370 men. Prisoners trained in building skills at other Midland Prisons are assisting in converting Ranby, a former Army Camp, to a category C prison at a cost of about $ 1.6 Million. Prisoners will be engaged in an extensive rebuilding programme, which over the next two years, will provide purpose uilt accomodation for full occupation.
