Jul. 07, 1971 - Prisoners Build Midlands Prison Which Was Formally Opened. Mr. Mark Carlisle, M.P. Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office, formally opened Ranby Prison, near East Retford, Nottinghamshire, which will eventually accomodate 370 men. Prisoners trained in building skills at other Midland prisons are assisting in converting Ranby, a former Army Camp, to a Category C prison at a cost of about £1.6 million. Prisoners will be engaged in an extensive rebuilding programme, which over the next two years, will provide purpose-built accommodation for fall occupation.
