Oct. 10, 1980 - Army Moves Into Franked Prison Durham: Mr. William Whiltelaw, the Home Secretary, last night sailed in the army guard prisoners during the present prison officers dispute. The first troops, eighty men of the First Battalion the Border Highlanders were moved into the Frankland Prison near Durham, which was not due to be open before 1982. The Crisis caused by prison officers taking action to win payment for working during the meal breaks and this action has paralysed Britain's jails, and police station, throughout the country are now holding 3, 300 prisoners and were at bursting point. The troops main jobs will be to provide essential services, like running the kitchen and also patrol the perimeter wire of the prisons.
