Professor Carlo Schmid, West German politician

Dec. 12, 1979 - Professor Carlo Schmid died: On December 11th 1979, after returning from the party congress of the West-Germany Social Democratic Party (SPD), in Berlin, Prof. Carlo Schmid died of influenza. Born on December 3rd 1896 at Perpignan, France, he became a lawyer and a judge after having finished university. Afterward he was a lecturer at the Kaiser Wilhelm-Institute for foreign law and ethnology in Berlin. In 1929 he habilitated at the university of Tuebingen, West Germany at the faculty of law. After the second world war. Carlo Schmid became the first Prime Minister, Minister for culture and for law of Baden-Wuerttemberg. He has been a member of the Federal Diet from 1949 to 1972 and its vice-president untill 1966. He has been part of the directorate of the SPD since 1946. Professor Carlo Schmid has published numerous professional books and was an interpreter of French classics
