Professor Carlo Schmid, West German politician
Dec. 12, 1976 - Carlo Schmid Will Become 80 Years Old: On December 3rd, 1976, professor Carlo Schmid (picture), one of the most prominent politicians of the West-German Social Democratic Party, will become 80 years old. Born at Perpignan, France, he became a lawyer and a judge after having finished university. Afterwards he was a lecturer at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institute for foreign law and ethnology in Berlin. In 1929 he habilitated at the university of Tubingen at the faculty of law. After World War II, Carlo Schmid became the first Minister President, Minister for Culture and for Law of Wurttemberg-Hohenzollern. He has been a member of the Federal Diet from 1949 to 1972 and its vice president until 1966. He has been part of the directorate of the SPD since 1946. Professor Carlo Schmid has published numerous professional books and is an interpreter of French classics
