Aug. 08, 1956 - The Professor's Cutlass Act Closes Down: Singer Carol Hayes, 25, was cut on the head during a sword-and-apple William Tell act because she moved said the man who held the sword, Professor Jimmy White, yesterday. Carol was injured after she agreed to let the Professor cleave the apple in two while she balanced in on her head. She stepped forward when Jimmy White could not get any volunteers from the audience during the Ramsgate Sports Week fete at Ellington Park on Thursday White swung the sword over his head, then brought the blade smartly down. As the apple split in two, watchers were horrified to see that Carol's head was injured. She had a two-inch cut which was stitched at the hospital. Yesterday Carol lay in bed at her Ramagate flat listening to the strains of music from Frederic Hargrave's Band Show, with whom she should have been singing. Photo shows.
