Professor Sir Alexander Haddow
Dec. 12, 1966 - Cancer - A Big Step Forward: Injections which can completely cure a proportion of two kinds of cancer have been developed for the first time in London. This significant news was given by Professor Sir Alexander Haddow, Director of the Chester Beatty Research Institute, and one of the most eminent cancer experts. In one type of tumour the success rate of this revolutionary new treatment is about 80 percent of the cases treated. It must be stated though, that there are still important fundamental problems to be overcome before it can be described as a major scientific breakthrough. This was part of Sir Alexander Haddow's statement to a Press Conference in St. Jame's Palace: Over the last year or a we have, for the first time, applied chemical treatments which can completely cure two types of human cancer in a proportion of cases. The first of these is lymphoma, a form of the disease which mainly strikes African children and in which the rate of success had been about 16 per cent. The second is choriocarcinoma, tumour which sometimes follows pregnancy and in which the rate of success is about 80 percent. Photo shows Professor Sir Alexander Haddow
