Protection of storks from extinction, Germany

Mar. 31 No danger for family stork: Wildlife experts are foretelling, when the year 2000 comes, the storks will become extinct. By drained meadows and bogs, rills straightened, filled up ponds i.e. the offer of food for these animals is limited much more from year to year. Furthermore also plant protective agents (pesticides) and the reduction of insects by chemicals are the reason that a lot of stork eggs are sterile. Here an example when in Schleswig-Holstein, one of the countries in the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1940 2175 couples of storks were registered, this number was reduced till now to 400. Because storks are very often living on the top of an electrical mast, now the electricity supply company of Schleswig-Holstein has an excellent idea: All these occupied poles were fitted out with a nest platform. mounted in an adequate distance to the conductor. By this as well dangers for the storks are impeded vastly as also interruptions of the current by short circuit
