Queen Elizabeth II, Maundy ceremony, Canterbury

1965 - Queen Attends Royal Maundy Ceremony At Canterbury. Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh - H.M. The Queen attended the traditional Royal Maundy ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral yesterday. The Ceremony is a survival of the ancient custom when specially minted silver coins were distributed on the Thursday in Holy Week to poor men and women equal to the number of years in the Sovereign's age. Maundy Thursday is the annual commemoration of Jesus betrayal by Judas - and in English tradition was a day for distribution of food and money to the poor in Maunds - or baskets.. Photo Shows: H.M. The Queen ceremoniously touches the sword at the West Gate of Canterbury Cathedral when she attended the Maundy ceremony
