1957 - The Queen and Prince Philip Distribute Maundy Money at St. Albans Abbey for the First Time: The aged and needy folk of St. Albana received the Royal Maundy Money from the Queen today, the first time that this ancient ceremony has been held outside London. Usually it is held at Westminster Abbey. Photo shows Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip with officials and Yeomen, after the distribution by Her Majesty of the traditional Royal Maundy Money at St. Albans Abbey today. The group carry nosegays of sweet-smelling herbs and spring flowers - the ancient precaution against possible infection
