Queen Elizabeth II, opening of new Forth Road Bridge
Sep. 09, 1964 - Queen Elizabeth II opens the new £20 million Forth Road Bridge at South Queensferry, Scotland: Thousands of people cheered as the Queen accompanied by Prince Philip arrived at South Queensferry to open the Forth Road Bridge, a marvel of modern engineering costing £20 million. Vehicles will be charged two shillings and sixpence each to cross the bridge, which provides the first road link direct from Edinburgh across span suspension bridge in Europe with a main span of 3, 300 feet. The 800 year old ferry service is to end.
