Queen Elizabeth II opening Newport steelworks

Oct. 10, 1962 - The Queen Opens Newport Steelworks: The Queen yesterday opened a new 50 million steel works at Llanwern, near Newport, South Wales. She pressed a button to send the first slab of molten metal trundling into the mill to be reduced to strip at the Spender steelworks of the Richard Thomas and Baldwins Company. The factory employs 6, 000 men and is one of the most modern in the world. Photo shows Steelworkers cheer as the Queen and Prince Philip are driven past them to inspect the hot strip mill
