Queen Mary liner arriving in New York, USA

Feb. 02, 1953 - New York tug strike fails to defeat Docking of the E.S. Queen Mary: The dockside in New York was crowded by dockers - onlookers etc. to witness the amazing feat of the docking of s.s. Queen Mary - a feat which she managed without the aid of the usual 20 tugs pushing and pulling her alongside the pier. Even the striking tug crews had to admit that It took plenty to beat these Britshers'. At the first attempt the fast flowing tide put the giant liner in an unfavorable position just as she had her bows in the dock entrance, and the skipper quickly put her estern. At the second attempt the ship grazed the pier but managed to get in without damage and drew herself alongside by her haes and winches. Photo shows onlookers watch as the Queen Mary comes in to dock in New York, without the aid of the tugs
