Aug. 08, 1979 - Installation Of The Queen Mother As Lord Warden And Admiral Of The cinque Ports At Dover: The ceremony of the Installation of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother as Lord Warden and Admiral of Cinque Ports andconstable of Dover Castle. The name of the Cinque Ports is derived from Quinque Portuus and as this name implies, were five harbours; Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich. The Cinque Ports were in existence before the Norman Conquests and were the Anglo-Saxon successors to the Roman system of coastal defense in the South East of the country. The last member of the Royal Family to hold this office was King George V. when Prince of Wales, but he was never installed. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, is the first Lady to hold this appointment and will be the first member of the Royal Family to be installed.
