Racing punts on the River Cam
Feb. 29 In-out into the cool, cool cam!.: It was the boat race with a difference and I don't mean just the Punts. They were the same two famous universities Oxford and Cambridge, or at least rather dubious representatives of the same, the Charin and Dumper clubs, respectively membership restricted to past and present members of the universities, who have entered the Rivers Cam and Granta from a punt, fully clothed, and in the least bit frame of mind for doing so. Yesterday, Sunday June 14th was a particularly keen contest, for the scores were 3-3 to date, But to the race, which is a men's relay of eight a-side, the baton being a girl undergraduate called the Queen Baton whose responsibility is to jump from punt to punt at the end of each lap or, at most, try to! She always ends up in the River and so do most of the other undergraduates. It was a wonderful Summer's day, and a large crowd turned up to cheer the antics. Just for those intrepid punters: Cambridge won by 2 lengths in record time of 27 minutes
