1953 - The Queen Distributes Maundy Money. H.M. The Queen - accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh - making her first public engagement since the death of Queen Mary, went to St. Paul's Cathedral, London, this morning for the ceremony of distributing the Royal Maundy money.. The Maundy Thursday ceremony dates back to olden times, and was a day of elmsgiving, upon which the sovreigna of England -through theirlmoners - gave money, food, and clothing to as many poor people as the kings were old.
