Reenactment of living chess match, Marostica, Italy

Sep. 18, 1973 - A reenactment of a living chess match as it was played in September 1554 by two Italian nobles was just held in the picturesque village of Marostica, in northern Italy. The two young men, in love with the governor's daughter, wanted to duel for their love. Learning of their intentions, the governor arrested the two suitors. To prevent a duel, the governor had them play a game of chess in order to decide who would win his daughter's hand in marriage. The reenactment of this memorable event draws numerous curious spectators from all over the world
