May 05, 1960 - Bloodless coup D'Etat in Turkey. Armed forces take control. National assembly leader in custody. Armed forces took over in Turkey in a bloodless coup d etat at midnight and promised to hold free elections and to hand over control to the winner. Among those said to be in custody are the Turkish President Mr. Celal Bayar, the President of the National Assembly Mr. Refik Koraltan and the Minister of the Interior Mr. Namik Gedik. The army takeover follows weeks of unrest sparked off by student demonstrations.
