Refugees remaining in Europe, housing

Homes - Europe's Remaining Refugees!: These are the sort of dwellings in which men and women - displaced from their homelands during the war - are still existing after more than 10 years of peace! They are at a refugee camp near Hanover. Hopes of return to native lands have long since been given up. Efforts of authority (UNRRA) are today devoted to integrating the refugees into the communities in which they now live in camps. But this is not easy.. After Ten Years Of Peace Europe Still Has 225, 000 Refugees: In camps dotted over Europe, and especially in West Germany, are some 225, 000 pathetic people, old folks, mothers and fathers with young children, and virile persons who could be productively working. Ten years after the war, they are still labelled officially refugees and it is to help them that the United Nations Association is launching a new appeal this Autumn, to provide them with better living conditions, permanent homes and education. Main problem is that the refugees themselves are not easily assimilated, and the populations in which the camps are situated do not take kindly to this assimilation. As hopes of ever being repatriated fade, new efforts must be made to wipe out this camp life with all its unnaturalness, and help some form of integration: This is one of a series of pictures taken at some of the camps in Germany showing the living conditions of the people and something of their individual family tragedies
