Residents protest against newly opened motorway, London
Jan. 10, 1962 - angry residents protest at opening of new motorway extension. The official opening of London's newest stretch of motorway. The 30 million Western Avenue extension was disrupted today by angry residents, many of them mothers with young children, who live in the shadow of the motorway. Armed with banners saying Home before roads etc, the protesters lined across the motorway and stopped the procession of official cars. The action followed two protest meetings last night at which the residents claimed that their homes will be seriously affected by the three-mile stretch of motorway. The extension was opened by Michael Heseltine, Parliamentary Secretary at the Transport Ministry.
