Rev Vernon Mitchell appointed strip club censor, London

Oct. 10, 1960 - Vicar Will Censor The Strippers: A Vicar with two teenage daughters took on a new job yesterday - as censor of Soho striptease acts. He was appointed by three club owners who have launched their own clean-up drive. The owners, who have banded together to form the Theatre Clubs Association, want to subject strippers to a strict code of ethics; Make them liable to instant dismissal-and inclusion on a blacklist - for the industrial misconduct of appearing in the nude; Appoint a full time inspector with a big enough salary to prevent bribery, to keep an eye on the clubs. Leading the campaign will be the Vicar, the Rev. Vernon Mitchell, of St. Philip's, Norbury, London. Touring Soho's soft lights and blue music night spots with him will be two more censors appointed by the Association, Mr. Pat Brand, editor of Melody Maker, and Mr. Robert Gaddes, editor of the Night Life section of What's on in London. The association, representing the 250, 000-strong Nell Gwynne, Panama an Casbah clubs, has given them complete freedom to veto what they don't like- even if it means losing business.
