Riots of August 1969 This disorder culminated in the Battle of the Bogside (12 August 1969-14 August 1969) involving a huge nationalist communal uprising in Derry. The riot started in a confrontation between Catholic residents of the Bogside, police, and members of the Apprentice Boys of Derry who were due to march past the Bogside along the city walls
