Mar. 03, 1973 - Rita Tushingham launches 100, 000 Oxfam National appeal for India drought victims.: Actress Rita Tushingham today launched Oxfam's national appeal on behalf o the victims of the present severe drought in Western India. 100, 000 is needed to extend existing drought relief schemes. A Halco drilling rig, similar to seven now being used by Oxfam to sink wells in the worst hit drought areas of Maharashta State, has been set up in the Sainsbury Precinct, Kings Road, Chelsea. The idea is to draw the attention of passers-by to the fact that millions of farmers in Western India now face ruin and sever food shortage due to the drought situation, and to collect donations from shoppers. Rita Tushingham launched the appeal by making a donation in the form of a Tap Taz. Oxfam estimates that if everyone would give just 2p for every tap in their home, adequate funds would be provided to extend the drought relief programme. Buckets will be used as collection boxes for cash in aid of Oxfam;s water drilling and feeding programme, and volunteers with buckets set off for destinations all over London to collect money and distribute leaflets about the sufferings of people in Western India.
