Robert Runcie, new Archbishop of Canterbury
Sep. 09, 1979 - Right Reverend Robert Runcie is to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury; The next Archbishop of Canterbury is the Bishop of St. Albans, the Right Reverend Robert Runcie, it was announced today. The 57 year old bishop takes over from the present Archbishop Dr. Donald Coggan, who at 70, announced that he would retire at 70, next January. Bishop Runcie was awarded the Military Medal during the second world war for rescuing a tank crew after it had been hit and caught alight, He has been at St. Albans since 1970.
