Robot replaces batsman for aircraft carrier landings
Feb. 29 Robot Replace Batsmen for Flat top Landings: The British Admiralty today announced a new invention to help land the faster aircraft of the future. It is expected to replace that familiar flight deck figure, the batsman. The aid consists of a large curved mirror which the pilot watches when he approaches the aircraft carrier from astern. A blob of light is projected into this mirror from a group of lights in the after-part of the carrier, and the pilot keeps this blob in line with a row of lights at the correct angle to the deck.
