Jul. 07, 1986 - Forgotten crimes of Buchenwald: Seventeen years after the Russians liberated East Germany, Buchenwald still stands as a grim reminder of the horror of the Nazi regime. The infamous concentration camp for political prisoners, near Leipzig, has been set up by the Communists as a museum. Today visitors can still see the torture chambers, the cells, the crematorium, the experimental operating theater, unchanged except that the stench of human misery is exchanged for an air of sanitary cleanliness. But such is the short memory of the world that few people come to Buchenwald. Our photographer saw only two visitors during a day spent there. This is what was known as the health check room. But behind the harmless looking height measure stood a Nazi with a revolver, ready to exterminate a prisoner with a shot in the back of the head
