Rotating shield tunnelling demonstrated, Derbyshire
Feb. 02, 1962 - Rotating Shield Method of Tunnelling Demonstrated. The new Rotating Shield method of tunnelling in clay, chalk, sand, gravel etc, produced by the Butterley Company of Derbyshire, was demonstrated at Horsley, Derbyshire, yesterday. It is based on the use of a shield designed on the principle of an auger rotated by hydraulic jacks reacting tangentially against the end segments of the double spiral lining, which can consist of plain concrete blocks or cast iron segments. The reaction of the jacks presses the lining tightly against the clay and thus eliminates grouting. Since shoving, clay outing, mucking and lining proceed simultaneously and continuously the rate of progress is high. The method is applicable to straight and curved tunnels of any diameter, and in addition to the normal control of direction by jacking, a steering device can be incorporated. The shield is demonstrated in a 6 ft. diameter tunnel and can be operated without undue effort at a speed of about a yard per hour cut, mucked and lined, with a 5 HP air motor as the only source of power.
