Roy Jenkins hosts sonic boom event anticipating Concorde

1965 - Sonic Bang Demonstration of Upwood: The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Roy Jenkins, was host to members of both Houses of Parliament, officials, local authority representatives and others, at a sonic bang demonstration carried out at Upwood, near Peterborough, by Lightning Fighters from a height of five miles. They were reproducing the sort of booms expected from the Anglo-French Concorde airliner, which will be the first to break the sound barrier in 1968. Mr Jenkins said: These supersonic bangs are a vital factor affecting the development of the Concorde programme, and it is important to see if they can be kept from being intolerably objectionable to those people living on the flight path of airliners'.
