Royal bed in Elm Bank Hotel, York

Mar. 31 And So To Bed: If you happen to be staying in the ancient city of York and have booked into the Elm Bank Hotel for the night, then come bedtime you may be in for a surprise! For, it is quite possible that the bed on which recline your tired body after touring the sights of the historic city will be one of the most famous beds in the land. Previous occupants have included the Dukes of Clarence, Cumberland, Cambridge and the Prince Regent, but probably the most famous must surely be King George IV who spent many a happy hour sampling the 6'6 wide by 7 long bed in the shadow of the two full size eagles carved at either side of the head boards. Today it is a favourite with honeymooners. Said the hotel owner, Mr. Gordon Granger; The bed originally was in the Brighton Pavillion and naturally I've had scores of offers mainly from Americans, but it is not for sale. One modern day occupant was Sir John Betjamin, the Poet Laureate. Photo shows Miss Alyse Sturdy (17) an employee at the Elm Bank Hotel relaxing on the Royal bed
