Feb. 02, 1958 - An Early Bird'-Is Attacked By Royal Elephant. Swedish Born American On Visit To Cambodia: Seventy-three year old Swedish-American Filip a-Bjorklund of Whittier, California-member of the Early Birds Association-had a frightening experience during his recent visit to Cambodia- on his round-the-world trip. Mr. Bjorklund was about to take pictures of an elephant from the stables of the King of Cambodia-when the elephants and the visitor were out for their respective morning walks-when an elephant attacked him-the beast's one and only tusk passed between Bjorklunds left arm and chest. With great presence of mid-Bjorklund hung on the tank and was carried across the street and pushed up against the fence-by which time the mahout got the animal under control-and the visitor was enabled to escape-with just a few cruises. He continued his trip next day-none the worse for his experience. (The Early Birds association limits its membership to those who piloted a glider, airplane, gas ballon or airship prior to December 17th 1916 August 14th. 1914 in the case of foreigners, as Mr. Bjorklund then was). mr. Bjorklund was first licensed as a pilot in 1913. He was a test pilot and flying instructor during World war I-in the U.S. He is now seventy three. Photo shows.
