1947 - Nazi Camp killer of 4 million dies on his own Rudolf Hoess was hanged today on the gallows he used to kill some of the 4, 000, 000 persons put to death while he was the wartime commandant of the Nazi Oswiecim (Auschwitz) Extermination Camp. Witnesses said that the short stocky 47-year-old Hoess, accused of one of the biggest mass killings in world history, went calmly to his death in the early morning. Only a handful of guards and justice officials saw Hoess pay the penalty
