Mar. 03, 1956 - Coventry City - San Lorenzo Match Abandoned. Player Kicks Referee: Arthur Ellis - who is one of the world's most famous referees - abandoned the friendly match between Coventry City and San Loren of the Argentine at Coventry - just before half time. Sanfilippo (19) the San Lorenzo inside the left kicked Mr. Ellis when Coventry were awarded a penalty just before half time. The score was then 1-1. Mr. Ellis called for an interpreter and police and ordered Sanfilippo off the field. When the player refused to go - pandemonium broke loose. Seven police officers struggled with the Argentine player- who afterwards began fighting with his won trainer on way to the dressing room. The 17, 357 crowd booed - whistled and slow haclapped. Half an hour later the crowd was told that the match would be abandoned. Photo Shows: San Lorenzo player shiver around the touch line - after the game had been stopped last night
