1965 - The Maestro plays his last game. Sir Stanley Matthews retires. To mark the retirement of Sir Stanley Matthews, from football at the age of 50 - a farewell match - between the Sir Stanley Matthews X1 and a world X1 - was played last night at stoke, where he began his great career 33 years ago. A host of international footballers from all parts of Europe took part, as well as some Britain's finest footballers. the World X1 won by 6-4.
