Aug. 29, 1957 -est performance of the world in parachute jumping: Just after the world's record of the Soviet parachute jumper Nikolaj Nikitin who travelled 8 and 3/4 miles in a free drop before opening the parachute, six of his compatriots set a new world's record in parachute jumping from the stratosphere. They jumped from an altitude of 9 and 1/1 miles and opened their parachuted when they were less than 333 feet above ground. It took them more than 4 minutes in free drop.
