Jan. 01, 1967 - President Nikolai Podgorny - the first Soviet head of state to visit the country - arrived today in Rome for a week-long visit to Italy. The last visit by a Russian head of state to Italy was by Zar Nicholar II in 1909. The Podgorny visit returns one by then President Giovanni Gronchi to Moscow in 1960.
