Mar. 09, 1980 - 70th Birthday Of Samuel Barber: On the 9th March 1980 the American composer Samuel Barber (pictured) will be 70 years old. Barber was born in West Chester (Pennsylvania). From 1924 to 1932 he was studying piano, vocal music, conducting and composition in Philadelphia. At 18 years old he received the Bearns-prize of Columbia University and at 23, the famous Pulitzer-prize. Very early such well-known conductors as Toscanini and Bruno Walter took interest in Barber's works. His music which is far away from any experiments is very popular especially in the United States. Samuel Barber created ballets, choral and orchestral music, symphonies, songs and chamber music as well as the opera Vanessa, for which he again got the Pulitzer-prize in 1958. One of the most popular of Barber's compositions is the Adagio for strings, opus 11, which was arranged from the slow movement of his 1st string quartet
