This was one of the very few occasions when an officer had to use a gun on board a British ship to bring a panic-skicken mob to order. The officer was the Titanic's Second officer C. H. Lightoller, played by Kenneth More in the film. Although the gun was fired only into the air it stemmed the panic- but who can say what man will not panic when faced with certain death - or the chance for life in a tiny lifeboat?
