Mar. 03, 1963 - German Play Creates Controversy All Over The World. Accuses Pope of Not Standing Up To Hitler'. A play which accuses the late Pope Pius XII of not standing up to Hitler during the war is to be presented in London by the Royal Shakespeare Company in September. It is called The Deputy or The Representative and was written by 32 year old Protestant Rolf Hochhuth who was a member of the Jungvolk, the Nazi organisation for children. Herr Hochhuth alleges that Pope Pius refrained from condemning Nazi persecution of the Jews. He did so, the play claims, because of a Concordat he signed with Germany before the War and fear of a Communist victory. The play was presented at the Theatre am Kurfurstendamm in Berlin - with Karl-Heinz Kellerman playing the Pope and Gunter Tabor as Riccardo'.
